Russian Agent Apprehended

According to Главком: The Ukrainian Security Service's (SBU) counterintelligence unit has apprehended an agent of Russian military intelligence in the Donetsk region. This individual was responsible for directing and correcting Russian airstrikes against Ukrainian Armed Forces positions in the Pokrovsk sector. The agent has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which pertains to high treason committed under martial law. This arrest highlights the persistent threat of espionage and sabotage operations within Ukraine's borders.

According to the investigation, the agent, an unemployed resident of Dobropillia, carried out tasks related to adjusting aerial bombardments. His primary targets for reconnaissance were:

  • Ukrainian fortified areas;
  • Artillery combat positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The occupying forces planned to use 1.5-ton guided aerial bombs for precision strikes. During a search of the suspect's property, a smartphone was seized, which he used to communicate with a Russian intelligence officer via a messenger app.

The agent traveled around the Pokrovsk agglomeration, photographing military installations and marking their geolocations on maps. He maintained constant contact with a handler from Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), whose identity has already been established by SBU counterintelligence.

"Upon receiving the coordinates, the occupiers planned to carry out precision strikes using available weaponry, including 1.5-ton guided aerial bombs," the SBU reported.

Current Status and Broader Context

The suspect is currently in custody and faces a potential sentence of life imprisonment with confiscation of property. In related operations, SBU counterintelligence and the National Police also thwarted attempted terrorist acts in Kharkiv and prevented an attack in Dnipro by detaining a female Russian agent. These actions demonstrate the active efforts of Ukrainian special services to counter Russian intelligence operations amid the ongoing war. The conflict has seen a significant increase in such covert activities targeting both military and civilian infrastructure.

The detention of this Russian agent underscores the critical role of Ukrainian intelligence agencies in safeguarding national security and preventing potential terrorist acts. Within the context of the protracted war, such counter-espionage operations are vital for protecting military assets and civilian populations. Effectively responding to threats posed by Russian special services demands continuous vigilance and coordination among various state security structures.

The recent arrest of a Russian military intelligence agent in the Donetsk region underscores the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces regarding espionage activities.
