Health News

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Flying presents certain physiological challenges to the body. Cabin pressure is typically set to match conditions at around 2,400 meters above sea level. This, combined with dry air and limited movement, can trigger serious medical events. Research shows that emergencies now occur on roughly one in every 212 flights-a sharp increase from 2013, when the rate was about one in every 604 flights.

Dehydration is a major factor behind many in-flight health issues. Due to low humidity in the cabin, the body can lose up to 360 ml of fluid per hour. This can lead to hypoxia, especially as intestinal gases expand to four times their ground-level volume during a flight. The most common medical emergency onboard is fainting. However, the majority of fatalities are linked to heart problems. Professor Adam Taylor, an anatomy expert at Lancaster University, notes:

“The vast majority of deaths during flights are related to cardiac events.”

Advice for Passengers

Given these risks, travelers are urged to take a few precautions. Recommendations include:

  • drinking fluids regularly;
  • doing in-seat exercises to boost circulation;
  • and being especially cautious if they have existing heart conditions or other medical concerns.

Understanding these dangers can help reduce the likelihood of unexpected health crises while traveling.

The rising number of medical incidents during flights highlights the need for greater passenger awareness of potential in-flight risks. As air travel becomes more common, it is vital for people-especially those with pre-existing health issues-to know how to protect themselves. This aspect of aviation safety may drive further research and initiatives aimed at improving cabin conditions and reducing health threats for passengers.

In addition to understanding the risks associated with heart-related incidents during flights, it's important to consider how environmental factors contribute to passenger discomfort. For instance, the cold temperatures often experienced on airplanes can exacerbate existing health issues.
