Why Is the Cabin Temperature Kept So Low?

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Ever wondered why you always need a jacket on a plane? The cabin temperature is deliberately maintained between 21-24°C (70-75°F) for safety and comfort. According to aviation expert Bobby Laurie, the primary reason is to prevent passengers from fainting due to hypoxia-a condition caused by reduced oxygen levels at cruising altitude. At the heights commercial airlines fly, the cabin is pressurized to mimic conditions at 6,000–8,000 feet above sea level, meaning the body receives about 25% less oxygen than it would on the ground.

Cooler air helps maintain adequate oxygen saturation, keeps passengers alert, stabilizes heart rate and breathing, and reduces nausea. It also helps regulate humidity, which on long flights drops to just 10–20%.

Who Controls the Temperature on a Plane?

Temperature control varies by aircraft manufacturer. On Boeing planes, pilots adjust the cabin climate from the cockpit using rotary dials calibrated from cool to warm. In contrast, Airbus aircraft give flight attendants control via a central touchscreen. Most passenger cabins are divided into two to four temperature zones, allowing for customized climate settings in different sections of the plane.

Where should you sit if you tend to get cold? Seats near emergency exits and window seats tend to be cooler. If low temperatures make you uncomfortable, avoiding these areas can make a big difference. Choosing your seat wisely before check-in can significantly impact your in-flight comfort.

Understanding why planes are kept cold isn't just about comfort-it's about safety. Maintaining this specific temperature range helps prevent the health risks associated with hypoxia, especially during long-haul flights. Knowing these facts allows passengers to make informed choices about their seating and travel experience.

While understanding the cabin temperature is essential for comfort and safety, it’s equally important to consider what clothing choices can enhance your flying experience. Dressing appropriately can significantly affect how you feel during the flight, especially in the cooler environment of an airplane. By selecting the right attire, you can ensure a more pleasant journey, regardless of temperature fluctuations.
