Credit requirements differ depending on the type of certification:
- aPHR and aPHRi: 45 general credits.
- PHR, PHRi, SPHR, SPHRi, GPHR, and PHRca: 60 credits.
- SPHR and SPHRi: 45 general credits plus 15 business credits.
- GPHR: 45 general credits plus 15 global credits.
- PHRca: 45 general credits plus 15 California-specific credits.
Each certification also requires completing at least one ethics activity within the three-year cycle.
The renewal cycle ends on the last day of the certified professional's birth month in the third year. Missing this deadline puts the certification into a suspended status for up to 12 months. During suspension, the renewal fee increases by $100. Each credit equals one hour of learning, with self-study capped at 30 credits per cycle. Membership in an HR association can earn up to 12 credits.
