According to НВ — Техно: Songbirds represent a substantial share of global avian diversity, so their evolutionary patterns offer a useful window into how climate has shaped life on Earth. New research shows that this group did not develop gradually: instead, their history is marked by sudden leaps, with brief spells of fast transformation followed by long periods of stability. By applying machine learning to more than 15,000 museum specimens, scientists traced the evolution of passerines-the order containing most living songbirds. ScienceDaily reported the findings.

To collect data, the team relied on a system called Skelevision, which photographs skeletal remains and automatically measures 12 bones. This approach generated over 170,000 individual measurements. More than 2,000 species were examined, allowing the researchers to reconstruct body structure across roughly 45 million years. One of the fastest evolutionary surges took place about 35 million years ago, at the same time as a sharp planetary cooling event near the Eocene–Oligocene boundary.

Shifting Speed of Evolutionary Change

Around 15 million years ago, the rate of change slowed markedly. The study also discovered that birds in areas with more pronounced seasonal temperature differences evolve faster than those living close to the equator. Since each specimen scan takes about 45 seconds, researchers can efficiently amass data for future studies and comparisons.

In short, the results confirm that songbird evolution proceeded through rare, intense periods of rapid change, separated by extended intervals of slow development.
