Strikes and Rising Demand Leave Seven Ukrainian Regions Partially Without Power

Ukraine regions partially blacked out due to shelling
Атаки та зростаючий попит призвели до відключень електропостачання в семи областях України.

Ukraine’s Electricity Situation

According to Главком: As of the morning of April 23, attacks on energy infrastructure combined with a surge in electricity consumption have caused partial blackouts for customers in seven regions of Ukraine. The affected areas include:

  • Dnipropetrovsk
  • Donetsk
  • Zaporizhzhia
  • Poltava
  • Sumy
  • Kharkiv
  • Kherson

In the Mykolaiv region, a strike on an energy facility left one worker injured.

Electricity Consumption Trends

By 9:30 AM on Thursday, power usage had climbed 4.9% compared to the same time the previous day. This spike is largely due to colder weather and overcast skies. The drop in temperatures has prompted more people to turn on heaters, while cloudy conditions across most of Ukraine have reduced the output of household solar panels. As a result, more energy is being drawn from the national grid.

Energy officials are urging residents to schedule the use of high-power appliances between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM to ease strain on the electrical network.

“Resilience plans have been approved for every region across the country. Road repairs after winter are also ongoing. It is crucial that communities and regional authorities do not waste time. Every important facility must be protected.”

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy

This situation highlights the critical need for a stable energy system in Ukraine amid external threats and changing weather patterns. The rise in electricity consumption due to cold and cloudy weather shows how climate factors can impact national energy security. Efforts by energy workers and the state to ensure uninterrupted power supply and protect critical infrastructure are vital for sustaining daily life under these challenging conditions.

As the situation evolves, it's important to note that power outages have also recently impacted five other regions due to Russian strikes on the energy grid. This underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
