Emergency Power Supplies to Ukraine Suspended

According to Главком: The Slovak government has decided to terminate emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. The state-owned company SEPS plans to cancel its contract with Ukrenergo, which governs these transfers. The last emergency power delivery from Slovakia to Ukraine occurred in January of this year. This move comes as Ukraine's energy grid remains vulnerable following sustained attacks on its infrastructure.

Ukrainian Requests and Slovak Initiatives

Following the ban on emergency electricity transfers, the Ukrainian side made requests for assistance, but these were not fulfilled. As Martin Magat noted,

"After Slovakia prohibited emergency electricity supplies, Ukraine reportedly made requests for help, but these were not satisfied."

The initiative to terminate the agreement came from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who proposed the unilateral cancellation of the contract. In late February of this year, he held a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which the transit of Russian oil through Ukrainian territory was discussed. Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed holding a broad meeting to discuss all aspects of bilateral cooperation. However, Robert Fico indicated he would prefer negotiations to take place on the territory of an EU member state.

According to available information, SEPS intends to terminate its contract with Ukrenergo, which provides for emergency electricity supplies.

This decision could significantly impact Ukraine's energy situation, particularly given the current challenges the country faces in the energy sector. Slovakia's refusal to continue emergency supplies may heighten risks to Ukraine's energy security and compel its government to seek alternative sources of electricity. In this context, the issue of energy cooperation between Ukraine and its neighbors is becoming increasingly critical for regional stability.
