New START Treaty Lapses

According to МЗС: The New START treaty, which governs the reduction of strategic offensive arms, has expired. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha commented on this development, stating it results from Russia's actions and serves as a tool for nuclear blackmail. He asserted that Russia violated the treaty's terms and withdrew from it in 2023, demonstrating a deliberate effort to fragment the global security architecture. The treaty's collapse marks a significant setback for nuclear arms control, a system built over decades.

Implications for International Security

Sybiha emphasized that the treaty's end is a direct consequence of the Kremlin's policies. He stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is attempting to challenge existing international rules and establish new ones favorable to him. The minister pointed to the historical context of the 1970s and 1980s, when the U.S. and European allies successfully contained the Soviet Union, underlining the critical importance of upholding international security norms today.

Furthermore, Sybiha argued that the end of New START must also mean an end to Russia's nuclear threats. He called for the necessity of denying Putin his ambition to unilaterally rewrite the rules of global security, warning of potential consequences for the international community's support of Ukraine. Russia's economy, currently in a recession, may also influence its foreign policy calculus.

The lapse of the New START treaty presents a major challenge to the global security architecture, as it was a key mechanism for nuclear arms control.

Andrii Sybiha

Amid heightened international tensions, it is crucial to ensure that nuclear-armed states adhere to their commitments to prevent further conflict escalation. Ukraine's position, which emphasizes the need for a collective response from the international community, could be a vital step toward maintaining stability in the region and beyond.
