According to НВ — Техно: SpaceX has partnered with Luxembourg-based Space Cargo Unlimited to launch the Starfall mission in 2028. This ambitious project aims to establish orbital manufacturing capabilities with the capacity to bring back up to one ton of cargo to Earth. The Starfall spacecraft is an aluminum capsule roughly three meters in diameter, equipped with a heat shield to protect it during reentry. Its inaugural demonstration flight took place on June 23, 2026, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.
The BentoBox system, designed for this mission, is engineered to carry payloads of up to one ton. Nicolas Goma, representing Space Cargo Unlimited, explained,
“Currently, our systems operate with payloads around 200 kilograms, but with Starship and Starfall, we are targeting one ton and eventually multiple tons.”
This advancement will unlock significant new possibilities for manufacturing in orbit.
The Potential of Orbital Manufacturing
Utilizing the unique environment of microgravity, orbital manufacturing enables the production of advanced materials and products that are difficult or impossible to create on Earth, including:
- pharmaceutical crystals
- optical fibers
- semiconductors
Will Bruy, an expert in this field, emphasized that
“microgravity offers a fundamentally different environment for developing medicines that cannot be produced on Earth.”
This breakthrough could revolutionize medical technology and manufacturing processes.
The first commercial flight of Starship carrying the BentoBox system is planned for 2028. However, Starship has yet to complete an orbital flight, with its 14th test launch scheduled no earlier than September 22, 2026. Demonstrating Starfall’s enhanced payload capacity-expanding from 100 kilograms to one ton-will require several years of rigorous testing.
Space Cargo Unlimited is actively engaged in discussions with over 100 clients, approximately 40% of whom specialize in biotechnology and life sciences. This collaboration highlights the growing synergy between private space enterprises and scientific institutions, driving innovation and research in space-based technologies.
The upcoming Starfall mission marks a pivotal milestone in the advancement of orbital manufacturing, poised to impact sectors ranging from healthcare to materials science.
