SpaceX Announces Acquisition of AI Startup xAI

According to Главком: Elon Musk's SpaceX has announced the acquisition of the artificial intelligence startup xAI, which also owns the social platform X. Announced on February 2, the deal aims to forge a unified technological ecosystem integrating artificial intelligence, rocket systems, satellite internet, and global information platforms. According to Bloomberg, the combined company could be valued at over $1.2 trillion. This move consolidates several of Musk's major technology ventures under a broader strategic vision.

Ambitious Plans for Orbital AI Data Centers

SpaceX and xAI are planning to develop artificial intelligence data centers in space. The agreement comes ahead of SpaceX's anticipated initial public offering, which could occur later this year. Musk has stated that within 2-3 years, space could become the most cost-effective environment for generating AI computing power.

To create these space-based AI data centers, SpaceX intends to launch up to one million satellites into orbit. These launches will utilize the Starship rocket, with the equipment to be positioned at altitudes between 500 and 2,000 kilometers. The satellites will be interconnected using laser-based communication links.

Despite the ambitious prospects, xAI has previously faced criticism over the performance of its AI chatbot, Grok, and is under regulatory scrutiny in both the U.S. and the EU.
