A $329 Million Tesla Megapack Deal by SpaceX
Tesla Megapack Deal: $329 Million in Industrial Batteries
According to НВ — Техно: SpaceX has acquired Tesla Megapack industrial battery systems worth $329 million during 2026, according to its financial report. $295 million of the total was paid out in the second quarter of the year. The information, reported by TechCrunch on August 4, 2026, suggests the equipment is intended primarily for the data centers of xAI, the company that was folded into SpaceX in early 2026.
Elon Musk serves as both CEO and the largest shareholder of SpaceX, while also running Tesla. The purchase comes after xAI had bought $430 million worth of Megapacks for its data centers prior to merging with SpaceX in 2025. Additionally, xAI spent $34 million on more Megapacks in Q1 2026. As of December 2025, SpaceX had also acquired Tesla Cybertruck electric pickups valued at $131 million at the manufacturer's suggested retail price.
Role of Megapack Units in Data Centers
For its data center power needs, xAI relies primarily on natural gas. Megapack batteries serve as backup power and handle brief spikes in demand from GPU clusters, an important capability for smooth data center operations.
SpaceX's move reflects a deliberate push toward energy self-reliance and lower electricity costs for its data center operations. Battery-backed systems can curb spending on power and improve the reliability of high-performance computing workloads. This also shows how different companies under Elon Musk's umbrella are increasingly working together, which could boost their overall efficiency.
