An article published on August 17 in The Conversation by Dan Baumgardt, Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol's School of Psychology and Neuroscience, explains why cognitive function declines when the mercury rises above 30°C. The key factors are active thermoregulation, dehydration, and disrupted sleep.
What Heat Does to the Brain
The hypothalamus acts as the brain's temperature control center. When the body overheats, it widens blood vessels, redirects more blood to the skin, and triggers sweating in order to bring body temperature back to 37°C. But in extreme heat, the brain-which is more than 70% water-is at risk of dehydration. That can reduce blood flow to the brain, alter neuron activity, and disturb electrolyte balance. Because neurons rely on electrical impulses and chemical messengers and are sensitive to temperature, these disruptions can impair memory, decision-making, and concentration.
High temperatures also cut down the deep, restorative sleep that the brain needs, making the situation worse. To feel better during hot spells, experts advise a few simple habits:
- Wear light, breathable clothing and use lightweight bedding.
- Take regular breaks from the heat.
- Drink enough fluids to keep both body and brain hydrated.
- If your thoughts feel like they're "melting," cool off, have some water, and return to the task later.
Heat's impact on the brain is a growing concern in a warming world, as temperatures become more extreme. Knowing how heat affects mental performance can help people adapt to climate change and stay productive in daily life.
