U.S. Issues Urgent Departure Warning for Citizens in Iran
U.S. Government's Urgent Advisory
According to Главком: The United States has issued an urgent warning for its citizens to leave Iran immediately. This alert, published by the U.S. Virtual Embassy in Tehran, cites heightened security measures, severe disruptions to transportation, and widespread internet outages. The Iranian government continues to restrict access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks, severely hampering communication and leaving residents without vital information.
These travel warnings are issued against a backdrop of long-standing regional tensions. Airlines are also limiting or canceling flights to and from Iran, which could make departure extremely difficult for foreign nationals. The U.S. State Department first urged citizens to depart on January 14, citing risks of interrogation, arrest, and detention. U.S.-Iranian dual nationals are specifically advised to exit using their Iranian passports, as the Iranian government does not recognize dual citizenship and will treat them solely as Iranian citizens.
Guidance for American Citizens
The U.S. Virtual Embassy cautions that American citizens face significant risks if they display any association with the United States, including showing a U.S. passport, which could be grounds for detention. Citizens without a valid U.S. passport should apply for one at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate after leaving Iran.
Given these circumstances, U.S. citizens are advised to develop an evacuation plan that does not rely on U.S. government assistance. Flight cancellations and disruptions can occur without warning, so contacting airlines directly for current information is critical. If departure is impossible, individuals should secure a safe location, stockpile food, water, and medicine, avoid demonstrations and drawing attention, monitor local news, and maintain contact with family and friends. Enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is also recommended for receiving the latest safety updates on Iran.
This urgent U.S. advisory points to a serious escalation of tension within Iran, likely connected to internal political or social unrest.
The restrictions on internet and communication channels further complicate the situation for foreign nationals who may remain in the country. In light of the elevated risks associated with staying in Iran, it is imperative that U.S. citizens exercise extreme caution and adhere to their government's guidance.
