This strategic reassessment gained urgency in the summer of 2023 when US Defense Department chief Pete Hagseth ordered the redirection of APKWS component shipments from Ukraine to the Middle East. This move involves 20,000 APKWS missiles, priced at approximately $30,000 per unit-a stark contrast to the nearly $4 million cost of a single PAC-3 MSE missile for the Patriot system. The United Arab Emirates actively employs Russian 'Pantsir' systems, helicopters, and Centurion C-RAM installations for drone interception as well. The 'Pantsir' systems demonstrate a particularly high interception success rate, reportedly exceeding 90%, showcasing their effectiveness in modern air defense scenarios.
