Cost-Effective Alternatives for Countering Drones

According to ХВИЛЯ: The United States and its allies are evaluating new, economically viable methods to counter Iranian 'Shahed' kamikaze drones. The focus is shifting from expensive systems like Patriot or THAAD to more affordable options, including APKWS missiles, air-to-air missiles, and anti-aircraft drones. This strategic reassessment gained urgency in the summer of 2023 when US Defense Department chief Pete Hagseth ordered the redirection of APKWS component shipments from Ukraine to the Middle East. This move involves 20,000 APKWS missiles, priced at approximately $30,000 per unit-a stark contrast to the nearly $4 million cost of a single PAC-3 MSE missile for the Patriot system. This shift reflects a broader trend in modern warfare, where swarms of inexpensive drones challenge traditional, high-cost defense economics.

The Effectiveness of New Counter-Drone Technologies

Using two APKWS missiles per drone enables the potential destruction of up to 10,000 targets. In contrast, AIM-120 and AIM-9 missiles, which cost hundreds of thousands or even over a million dollars each, have also been deployed against 'Shahed' drones. The United Arab Emirates actively employs Russian 'Pantsir' systems, helicopters, and Centurion C-RAM installations for drone interception as well. The 'Pantsir' systems demonstrate a particularly high interception success rate, reportedly exceeding 90%, showcasing their effectiveness in modern air defense scenarios.

These new approaches to countering drone threats highlight a growing focus on economical and efficient security solutions. They signal an evolution in the strategic thinking of the US and its allies when confronting emerging asymmetric threats. In an era of constrained budgets and rising security costs, optimizing resource allocation has become critical for ensuring stability and protecting national interests.
