Fines for expired driver's licenses: how the special procedure works during wartime

The number of fines for drivers with expired licenses is increasing in Ukraine. However, the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 184 dated March 3, 2022, extends the validity period of such licenses during martial law. This means that a driver's license that expired during martial law is automatically extended for the entire duration of martial law and for one year after its cancellation.

There is concern among drivers about fines for violating traffic rules. For the first offense, drivers may receive a fine of 3,400 UAH, and for a repeated offense, the amount may reach 40,800 UAH with the possibility of license revocation for a period of 5 to 7 years. This raises additional concern among drivers, especially those who have received a beginner driver's license, which is issued for two years. The validity period of a permanent license is 30 years.

Restrictions for beginner drivers

It should be noted that there are restrictions for beginner drivers, including a maximum speed limit of 70 km/h. Drivers who have questions about what to do in case of a stop can use the protection algorithm: it is important to know your rights and responsibilities.

According to the CMU Resolution No. 184, the license is valid, and drivers do not need to worry about fines for expired licenses during martial law. However, it is important to pay attention to the conditions for simplified exchange, which allow obtaining a new license without taking exams, and to remember the restrictions that beginners on the road often forget.

Thus, drivers in Ukraine have the opportunity to legally drive a car despite expired licenses, but they should be attentive to traffic rules and potential sanctions for violations.

This resolution during martial law aims to reduce stress and financial burden on drivers, as many citizens may face difficulties in obtaining new documents in wartime. However, it is important for drivers not to forget the responsibility that lies with them while driving a vehicle, regardless of the validity of their licenses.
