Amid Scandals, KNU Students Rally Against Rector Bugrov Ahead of May 27 Election

Demonstrators Gather to Oppose Rector Volodymyr Bugrov

While organizers in a Telegram chat reported roughly 500 participants, preliminary police estimates placed the number at the scene closer to 300. The university's total community is 30,000 strong.

Protesters are demanding a DNA analysis of items discovered in office No. 105. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has established a commission to investigate Bugrov's activities, an inquiry initiated by the university itself. Volodymyr Bugrov, who has led the institution since 2021, is seeking re-election. The rector's election is scheduled for May 27, 2026.

Corruption Scandals and Public Outcry

The National Agency on Corruption Prevention reviewed Bugrov's 2023 asset declaration and identified violations amounting to nearly 900,000 hryvnias. Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi District Court found him guilty of a violation related to the use of his son's car, a 2015 Volkswagen Golf valued at 660,000 hryvnias. The rector is appealing the court's decision. These legal troubles are unfolding at one of Ukraine's most prestigious universities, adding to the gravity of the situation.

Participants at the rally voiced their concerns about the university's climate. One student stated:

"I came here because I am part of this system. As a student, I want my university to have a transparent system, free from corruption, scandals, and intrigue."

She further added: "At the moment, we are not getting clear answers regarding various intimate acts alleged to have occurred within my university's walls, which raises doubts about what exactly is happening."

Another demonstrator emphasized:

"I am here because of a systemic problem within my university. That's why my sign says that corruption and intrigue fear transparency-that is my motivation."

The protesters' slogan is: "Bugrov-to the lab for testing." The action reflects deep-seated anxiety within the student body regarding the university's leadership and governance.
