University Election Postponement and Suspension of Acting Head Spark Protest
Protest Erupts Outside Ukraine's Ministry of Youth and Sports
According to Главком: On March 25, 2026, students and faculty of the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine (NUFPESU) staged a protest outside the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The demonstration was triggered by the ministry's decision to postpone the university's rector elections from March 25 to September 23, 2026, and to suspend the acting rector, Oleksandr Pyzhov. Protesters voiced their outrage and demanded a review of the ministry's decision. This protest highlights ongoing tensions in Ukraine's higher education sector regarding institutional autonomy and governance.
Ministry of Youth and Sports Defends Its Decision
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Serhiy Tymofeyev, explained the ministry's rationale for the postponement. He stated that the order was signed at 10:00 on March 24, with an accompanying letter issued at 10:20.
“The elections were not canceled-they were postponed,” Tymofeyev emphasized.
He also detailed that ministry representatives met with the acting rector at 16:30 on March 24, followed by a meeting with the university staff at 17:30.
Serhiy Tymofeyev stressed that
“the decision was not about dismissal, but about canceling the appointment of the acting rector.”
He assured that if Oleksandr Pyzhov is not guilty of any violations, there are no grounds for his dismissal from the vice-rector position. “I would like to caution everyone: do not think that someone here wants to do something without considering your opinion,” he added.
The protesters have vowed to hold another demonstration on March 26, 2026, continuing to demand transparency and fairness in the process of appointing the NUFPESU rector. Tymofeyev underscored that “the ministry is open to dialogue, no one is hiding,” and that he is prepared to convey the protesters' concerns to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Matviy Bidnyi.
This protest reflects the deep concern among NUFPESU students and faculty regarding administrative decisions they believe could jeopardize the university's future. In such situations, it is crucial for the ministry to genuinely consider the views and fears of the academic community, as this affects not only the institution's reputation but also trust in its leadership. Further negotiations between the ministry and the protesters could be pivotal in resolving the conflict and restoring stability at the university.
