Courtroom with the former ambassador of Ukraine
Загальна сума застави для колишнього посла України в США становить шість мільйонів гривень.

The Case of Olga Stefanyshyna

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The High Anti-Corruption Court has ordered former ambassador to the United States Olga Stefanyshyna to post bail of 6 million hryvnias, a decision that partially grants the prosecution's request. The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) had asked for a much larger 13.3 million hryvnia bail. Stefanyshyna faces allegations of illicit enrichment totaling 13.9 million hryvnias, along with two separate charges of failing to disclose assets. Investigators say that in June and July 2024, she asked her friend Tetiana Mazurenko to purchase two apartments in the 'Faina Town' housing complex.

During the hearing, the prosecutor pointed to risks that she might flee, influence witnesses, or interfere with the work of competition commissions. The court additionally barred Stefanyshyna from contacting Tetiana Mazurenko and several former subordinates tied to the investigation.

Fresh Allegations and Resignation

On August 5, anti-corruption authorities served Stefanyshyna with a fresh suspicion notice that includes illegal enrichment of 13.9 million hryvnias. According to SAPO, in 2024 Stefanyshyna bought two apartments in the Faina Town complex through her friend and handed over almost $100,000 in cash for renovations. Investigators also believe she failed to declare those apartments, a Mercedes car, and her stay in her parents' apartment at the Lvivska Ploshcha complex.

On August 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Olga Stefanyshyna from her position as ambassador to the United States. Stefanyshyna herself said the decision to leave was her own initiative. She also remarked:

'there was and remains nothing to hide'

and that she has

'further career plans, but they are not connected to public service'

. She stressed the importance of a calm approach, saying everything is unfolding 'calmly and without unnecessary emotion,' and also drew attention to threats she and her family members have received.

The case of Olga Stefanyshyna draws attention not only because of her former ambassadorial status but also because the allegations cast doubt on her integrity. With Ukraine actively fighting corruption, this case could shape public trust in state institutions and influence the next phase of anti-corruption policy. Observers will be watching the investigation and court proceedings closely, as their outcome may carry significant political consequences for the country. The proceedings are part of Ukraine's broader effort to demonstrate accountability in public office, particularly as the country continues its reform agenda.
