Kyiv Court Delivers Verdict in High-Profile Traffic Case

According to Главком: The Obolonskyi District Court of Kyiv has ruled in the case of Yaryna Arieva, found guilty of causing a traffic accident that resulted in injury. The court sentenced her to five years of imprisonment but suspended the sentence, imposing a three-year probation period instead. The prosecution, which had sought a 6.5-year prison term and an 8-year driving ban, has announced plans to appeal this decision.

Details of the Incident

The accident, which injured a woman, occurred on November 27, 2022, in Kyiv. According to the investigation, Yaryna Arieva, driving a Volkswagen Polo, struck a woman at a pedestrian crossing. The victim sustained severe injuries, including fractures to her limbs, jaw, and shoulder bone, as well as a traumatic brain injury. Arieva was formally notified of suspicion in May 2023, and the substantive trial began in the autumn of 2024.

During the trial, the prosecution insisted that Arieva was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the accident. The court acknowledged evidence of cannabinoid metabolites in her biological sample and certain clinical signs but deemed it insufficient to conclusively prove intoxication while driving. The court also lifted the seizure order on the Volkswagen Polo, which had been imposed in December 2022.

Iryna Vinokurova, a spokesperson for the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, confirmed the decision will be appealed. This case has drawn significant public attention in Ukraine, where road safety and accountability are pressing concerns. Yaryna Arieva is the daughter of Member of Parliament Volodymyr Ariev.

This case highlights critical issues of road safety and driver accountability, particularly concerning the use of narcotic substances.

The court's verdict has sparked public outrage, with many viewing the punishment as excessively lenient given the severity of the offense. Given the prosecution's intent to appeal, the case's future developments could potentially influence judicial precedent for serious traffic offenses in Ukraine.

The ongoing discussion surrounding road safety and accountability is further underscored by another recent case, where a driver under the influence received a lengthy sentence for a fatal incident at a pedestrian crossing. This case serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences associated with impaired driving.
