Switzerland Proposes Lowering Highway Speed Limits to Conserve Fuel

According to УНІАН — Туризм: In response to ongoing fuel supply challenges, Swiss authorities are contemplating reducing the maximum speed limit on highways to 80 km/h. This measure aims to reduce fuel consumption during a period marked by significant disruptions in oil product deliveries. The Federal Office for Economic Supply has already submitted this proposal, although a final decision has yet to be reached.

Fuel shortages in Switzerland have persisted for several weeks. The government has authorized the release of up to 45 million liters of diesel from reserves, which accounts for less than 4% of the total stockpile. These supply delays have been exacerbated by heavy rainfall in southern France, hindering both road and water transportation. In September, fuel reserves were tapped following an accident at the Cressier refinery, which halted operations for approximately two weeks due to technical issues.

Supply Chain Obstacles and International Context

Compounding the situation, low water levels in the Rhine River have further disrupted shipping routes and increased fuel delivery costs. Meanwhile, Russian refineries ramped up diesel production in October following an agreement between Presidents Trump and Putin. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak confirmed Russia's readiness to export diesel fuel in unlimited quantities.

“Three tankers carrying Russian diesel are en route to US ports, with one vessel currently listed under EU sanctions.”

These factors contribute to Switzerland’s fuel supply difficulties, which could impact the nation’s transportation infrastructure significantly.

The suggested speed reduction reflects the broader economic and environmental challenges Switzerland faces. Research into how such measures might reduce fuel consumption could guide future transport policies. Amid unstable fuel supplies, the country must prioritize alternative energy sources and conserve remaining oil products to maintain a reliable transportation network.
