According to Radiotrek — Світ: In a recent interview featured on the Polish platform Onet.pl, American historian Timothy Snyder expressed his view that the United States will no longer act as Europe’s primary protector against Russian aggression. He urged European nations, especially Poland and Ukraine, to embrace sovereignty and learn how to forge effective alliances. Snyder emphasized the importance of European countries relying on their own capabilities to ensure their security.

Complex Histories and Archaeological Insights

Snyder highlighted the intricate history of the Volhynia region, cautioning against oversimplifying it as merely a conflict between Poles and Ukrainians. He stressed the need to consider multiple perspectives, stating that

“history must also speak about ‘them.’”

According to him, collective memory often offers comfort, whereas true history can be unsettling but essential for maturity and understanding.

Beyond contemporary politics, Snyder explored ancient historical contexts such as the Tripillian culture. He referenced Nebelivka, a settlement dating back over 6,000 years, which may have housed roughly 15,000 inhabitants. Unlike early Mesopotamian cities, these Tripillian communities lacked centralized authorities, palaces, or temples, instead organized in large, concentric layouts.

Archaeological findings also reveal that among the Scythians, who once inhabited present-day Ukraine, there were female warriors, lending credence to Greek tales of Amazons. Snyder proposed the intriguing idea that Achilles, a legendary figure in ancient literature, might have been Scythian. He explained that Greek traditions portrayed warrior women as formidable foes, a portrayal now supported by archaeological evidence.

Timothy Snyder’s insights underscore the critical need for European nations-particularly Ukraine-to assert their independence and actively shape their foreign policies amid evolving global challenges.
