The tragedy occurred in a hotel room in Lavazze, Italy, where the athlete was on a training camp. The cause of death is currently unknown, and an investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Norwegian federation.

Bakken died during a break between World Cup stages. A day before, he was officially included in the application for the next stage in Oberhof and was in the top 15 based on the results of the first trimester of the Olympic season.
