The current rate is 3.4 counterfeit notes per million genuine banknotes. Despite the increase, this level is still lower than pre-war figures, when 7.1 counterfeit bills per million genuine were detected.

The National Bank of Ukraine has recorded an escalation in the situation with counterfeit dollar banknotes. According to the regulator's statistics, the number of detected counterfeits increased during the first half of 2024.

One Hundred Dollars – The Main Target for Counterfeiters

The American currency leads in the frequency of counterfeits among foreign currencies. Criminals focus their attention specifically on 100-dollar banknotes, making their exchange particularly risky.

The highest likelihood of receiving a counterfeit bill exists during transactions outside official exchange points – at informal markets, near transport hubs, or during street currency trading.

Key Signs of a Genuine Banknote

The main protection elements of a real 100-dollar bill include:

• Watermark with clear visibility when backlit
• Built-in holographic security ribbon (present on upgraded banknotes)
• 'Bell in the Inkpot' – a special element that changes color when the angle of view changes (exclusively on banknotes after 2013)
• High-quality thick paper with tactile relief printing
• Microtext distributed throughout the note

Banking institutions use professional equipment for multi-level currency authentication, making official exchange channels the most reliable option for conducting currency operations.

The message from the National Bank of Ukraine about the rise in counterfeit dollars indicates a worsening situation with currency counterfeiting in the country. In particular, special attention is paid to one-hundred-dollar banknotes as objects of criminal interest for counterfeiters.
