Off-Road Drivers Rally Against Environmental Enforcement

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Ukraine, which has been under martial law since the Russian invasion in 2022, saw a controversial protest on July 22, 2026 in the town of Yaremche, Ivano-Frankivsk region. Off-road vehicle owners, members of a local association of jeep and ATV enthusiasts, gathered near Ecological Control Point No. 1 to demonstrate against joint enforcement actions by the Eco-Inspection, police, and other officials. These teams had been fining drivers for illegally entering protected natural areas. The protesters demanded that their activities be legalized, that official routes be designated outside the nature reserve zones, and that more than 300 jobs tied to the off-roading industry be preserved.

The demonstrators argued that off-road driving provides the primary income for over 300 families in the community. They called for the approval of formal trails beyond the boundaries of the protected areas. According to official estimates, damage caused by unauthorized off-roading since the start of the year exceeded 1.4 million hryvnias. The protest sparked significant public debate, particularly due to the wartime context-many expressed outrage at seeing a large assembly of draft-age men during a time of war.

Reaction to the Rally

Military serviceman Valentyn Balahura criticized the protest on Facebook.

“In a country at war, we should see this many men at meetings concerning defense,” he stated.

Balahura also emphasized that

“the greatest injustice of this war is that some have lived for years with the understanding that their service can only end upon reaching retirement age or suffering a severe injury.”

He added that they continue to fulfill their duty while others argue about whether mobilization is even necessary.

The off-road protest also highlighted environmental concerns. Unregulated off-roading destroys vegetation, accelerates soil erosion, and disturbs wildlife. In response, protesters demanded that enforcement target only those who actually damage protected areas. Balahura further addressed the need for mobilization, asking, “We must honestly answer a simple question: who should replace those who have already served for years?” He also noted that 'every man has the opportunity to choose the unit, specialty, and team in which he wishes to serve.'

This demonstration in Yaremche reflects the complex transformations taking place in Ukrainian society during wartime. It underscores the tension between ecological protection and the economic interests of local residents. The protest also illustrates how military conflict and economic pressures intertwine, generating mixed reactions.
