New Restrictions on Motorized Travel in Yavorivskyi National Nature Park

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Following a July 28 incident in which rangers from the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve stopped motorcyclists from entering the protected zone around Mount Petros, Yavorivskyi National Nature Park in the Lviv region has now enacted a ban on cars, motorcycles, ATVs, and other motorized vehicles traveling outside public roads. This step is part of a wider national effort to limit the environmental impact of recreational off-roading. The order, signed by the park's director, aims to safeguard the area's natural complexes and valuable assets within the nature reserve fund.

This prohibition applies not just to standard automobiles and motorcycles; it also covers ATVs, other machinery, and recreational jeeping. Those who violate the protection regime for territories and objects of the nature reserve fund will face legal liability under Ukrainian law. The measure aligns with a broader legislative push: in January 2025, the Verkhovna Rada passed draft law No. 11024 on the second reading, which seeks to regulate jeeping across Ukraine.

Background and Consequences of the Ban

The controversy over off-road driving at Yavorivskyi escalated after the July 28 confrontation. Tourists on motorcycles attempted to bypass a closed barrier near Mount Petros, but were blocked by staff of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. Park administrators emphasize that rules exist to protect Ukraine's natural wealth, and they urge all visitors to respect the protected heritage.

Administration representatives underscored that "recreation in a national nature park should be safe for both people and the environment," adding, "take care of nature – and it will take care of us." The new restriction responds to growing environmental threats posed by intensive jeeping and similar activities that can damage ecosystems. It also reflects an institutional commitment to preserving unique landscapes and ensuring biodiversity for future generations, with legislative support at the national level reinforcing these efforts.

  • Protection of distinctive natural landscapes.
  • Conservation of biodiversity for generations to come.
