Belgium has taken a step towards integrating digital assets into the traditional financial system. Starting February 16, KBC Bank will become the first in the country to allow customers to buy and sell cryptocurrency directly through its own investment platform, Bolero. This is reported by KBC's press service.

The initiative is being implemented within a fully legal framework and will comply with European regulation MiCAR. The bank has already submitted documents to obtain the status of a crypto asset service provider. In the first phase, customers will have access to two of the most popular cryptocurrencies – Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Cryptocurrency trading through Bolero will meet EU requirements

The new service will operate on the principle of a so-called closed system. Buying and selling digital assets will only be possible within the Bolero platform. Cryptocurrency transfers to external wallets or receiving funds from other services will not be possible. The bank will take care of asset storage using its own secure infrastructure.

The main conditions of the service are:

  • operations possible only within the Bolero platform;
  • external crypto transfers are blocked;
  • asset storage is provided by the bank;
  • clients do not need to manage private keys.

Investing in digital assets will be available to prepared clients

The service is aimed at investors who make their own trading decisions. Before trading begins, each client must pass a risk comprehension test. Additionally, through the educational platform Bolero Academy, the bank plans to provide training materials on cryptocurrency market volatility and investment specifics.

The bank notes that the decision is based on research showing that about 45% of Belgians under 30 already have experience investing in crypto assets.
