Former Therapeutic Ward in Berezivka to Be Transformed into Housing for 80 Displaced Residents by 2026
Conversion of Berezivka’s Old Therapeutic Ward into Residential Units
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In Berezivka, a city in the Odesa region, an ongoing project is transforming the former therapeutic ward of the local hospital into housing for internally displaced persons (IDPs). The renovation will create 16 apartments, providing accommodation for up to 80 individuals. This initiative is funded by the regional budget with an estimated cost of approximately 38.7 million hryvnias. The construction is scheduled to be completed by October 30, 2026.
As of September 30, 2026, the contractor had already received payments exceeding 19.6 million hryvnias. Each apartment will feature its own kitchen, bathroom, and individual heating system, with nearly turnkey finishing. During a recent monitoring visit by journalists, interior finishing works were wrapping up, and electrical connections were expected to be established soon.
This project also aims to support healthcare workers displaced by the war. Valentina Vovchenko, the hospital’s medical director, emphasized the importance of accommodating medical staff who were forced to leave their homes due to the full-scale invasion and are now working in Berezivka:
“Among the future residents will be healthcare professionals who had to flee their homes because of the war and currently serve in Berezivka.”
It is important to highlight that converting the therapeutic ward into housing will not reduce the hospital’s medical capacity.
Funding Details and Future Outlook
The renovation began in 2023 under a contract worth about 13.7 million hryvnias. In January 2026, a follow-up agreement for 23.49 million hryvnias was signed to complete the reconstruction, install engineering systems, and improve the surrounding grounds. Although a more expensive option costing 53 million hryvnias was considered to repurpose the hospital building, the less costly project was ultimately chosen.
- The project documentation ensures accessibility for people with disabilities and other mobility challenges.
- There are no plans for comprehensive energy efficiency upgrades within the building.

Meanwhile, in Odesa, there are plans to renovate the burn center of City Clinical Hospital No. 10, a project estimated to require over 35 million hryvnias, although funding has yet to be secured.
The transformation of Berezivka’s former therapeutic ward reflects local authorities’ commitment to assisting internally displaced persons, particularly healthcare workers affected by the conflict. This project not only provides much-needed housing but also ensures the hospital’s medical services remain intact-an especially critical factor during wartime. Such efforts serve as a valuable model for other Ukrainian regions facing similar challenges amid ongoing displacement and healthcare demands.
As the renovation of Berezivka's former therapeutic ward progresses, the need for improved medical facilities remains critical in the region. For instance, Odesa's burn center is currently facing urgent upgrade plans that lack secured funding, highlighting the ongoing challenges in healthcare infrastructure. Understanding these developments is essential for grasping the broader context of healthcare support in the area. More details can be found in our report on the urgent upgrade plans for Odesa's medical facilities.
