In Chernivtsi, the number of buses on routes has been reduced: the city lacks 90 drivers

Chernivtsi is facing a shortage of public transport drivers. The Chernivtsi trolleybus administration lacks 90 employees, which has led to a reduction in the number of buses on some routes. Drivers are offered a salary of up to 50,000 UAH. This is reported by Suspilne with reference to the director of the enterprise, Hryhorii Orubets.

The enterprise most needs bus drivers. Currently, there are 82 working, but an additional 49 are needed. Trolleybuses are serviced by 77 drivers, but another 41 employees are lacking.

The personnel shortage has already affected the number of vehicles on the lines. On route No. 7, there is only one bus operating, although passengers are asking for a second one. On route No. 29, the number of vehicles has been reduced from three to two, and on route No. 1 - from four to three.

«We cannot provide an adequate number of transport. On route No. 7, there is one bus, and people want a second one, but we do not have the capacity to add it», — said Orubets.

Due to the staff shortage, the existing drivers have to work overtime. Meanwhile, the enterprise's employees can service different routes depending on the needs.

What salary is offered to drivers in Chernivtsi in 2026

The Chernivtsi trolleybus administration offers drivers a salary ranging from 25,000 to 50,000 UAH. The enterprise also promises official employment, payments twice a month, paid vacation, and credit for work experience.

One of the reasons for the personnel shortage, the director of the enterprise notes, is the lack of the possibility to reserve new employees.

«Currently, most of the reserved employees are drivers, locksmiths, and workers of the energy supply service», — noted Orubets.

Thus, even with salaries of up to 50,000 UAH, the enterprise is still unable to fill dozens of driver vacancies, which directly affects the availability of public transport on the city's routes.

It should be noted that Chernivtsi is preparing to revise the fare for city bus rides. If the executive committee supports the corresponding draft decision, starting from August 1, the cost of a single trip will decrease from 20 to 19 hryvnias.
