Over 900 Endangered Bats Rescued from Kharkiv Apartment Balcony

According to Главком: More than 900 bats of the endangered Nathusius' pipistrelle species have been rescued in Kharkiv after spending years hibernating on a residential balcony. The situation came to light in February when the apartment owner noticed the animals and saw that the balcony's cladding was beginning to collapse as the bats started to emerge. She immediately contacted the Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Center for assistance.

Specialists from the center carefully extracted all 900 bats and transported them to a treatment facility. The triage and initial care process lasted for three continuous days. During the operation, the rescuers noted:

“As the work progressed, it became clear that a large colony of Nathusius' pipistrelles was hiding under the cladding, so we needed to rescue them as quickly as possible. This was followed by days of non-stop work with the bats at the center.”

The exhausted and hungry animals received emergency care, including hydration and health assessments. They will now complete their hibernation in a specially designed cold room at the rehabilitation center. The Nathusius' pipistrelle is a protected species listed in Ukraine's Red Data Book, making this rescue particularly significant for conservation efforts.

• The 'Shkval' military command of the 7th Carpathian Border Guard Detachment in the Kharkiv region took in a chinchilla named Sonia, which was found abandoned in a settlement near the front line.
• A Bukovyna resident is providing a home to a 150-kilogram wild boar named Hudochok, who was brought to her as a small 5-kilogram piglet from the town of Sniatyn.

These cases underscore the critical importance of wildlife conservation and supporting animals caught in difficult circumstances. They highlight how urbanization and military conflict can place wildlife at risk. The active response from the public and specialized organizations in providing rescue and rehabilitation is crucial.
