Khmelnytskyi Region to Launch Smart Video Monitoring System

According to Главком: Ivan Ishchenko, the newly appointed head of police in Khmelnytskyi region, has announced plans to roll out an AI-driven video surveillance system across the area. This initiative became feasible after the Khmelnytskyi City Council approved 1.7 million Ukrainian hryvnias on June 18 for developing project and budget documentation. Ishchenko stated that the network of cameras will cover key high-traffic locations, including parks, intersections, railway stations, and social facilities.

Khmelnytskyi stands out as Ukraine’s only regional capital that currently lacks a 'Safe City' video surveillance system. Ishchenko, who previously led police forces in Chernihiv region, stressed the project’s significance for public safety. For context, many Ukrainian cities already rely on such integrated security systems to monitor urban areas and respond to incidents more efficiently.

The plan involves installing several thousand cameras equipped with artificial intelligence to recognize human faces and vehicle license plates. Additionally, the system will be able to adjust traffic light patterns to prevent congestion and will include fire safety features.

'I am now heading the police in my third region. In the previous two, we successfully implemented many such projects... This will benefit local residents and give citizens greater peace of mind,' Ishchenko added.

According to Oleksiy Biloshytskyi, First Deputy Head of the Patrol Police Department, speeding remains the leading cause of traffic accidents, accounting for over 42% of all incidents. In the first half of 2026, Ukraine recorded more than 4,300 injury-related crashes due to speed violations, resulting in over 600 fatalities and more than 5,500 injuries.

The new surveillance system aims to reduce these figures and enhance overall safety in Khmelnytskyi region.
