Plans for Alternative Crossings Over the Dnipro River in Kyiv

According to ХВИЛЯ: The city of Kyiv is moving forward with plans to construct multiple backup crossings over the Dnipro River, including the possibility of building an underwater tunnel. This initiative comes as a precaution against potential damage to existing bridges amid ongoing military conflicts. Preparatory work has already started, with construction expected to take up to three months. These new crossings aim to handle at least half the traffic capacity of the current bridges, which accommodate approximately 600,000 vehicles daily.

The project envisions using embankment dams combined with pontoon bridges as a rapid-response solution. Coordination efforts for this construction have been conducted during meetings involving the President of Ukraine. Key participants in the project include:

  • The Ministry for Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport
  • The Recovery Agency
  • The Military
  • Kyiv City Authorities

Similar infrastructure initiatives are planned in other parts of Ukraine, not limited to the Dnipro region.

"Urgent measures like the dam and pontoon bridges are being implemented swiftly... Work is already underway," stated Mykola Kalashnyk.

He added that preparatory activities are ongoing and construction will commence soon. Specific sites have been identified to maintain the flow of traffic during these developments.

The estimated costs for tunnel and concrete bridge projects may reach tens of billions of hryvnias, potentially climbing to hundreds of billions for large-scale infrastructure. "We are beginning to seek investments, donors, and international partners," Kalashnyk noted, emphasizing that current funding is insufficient for these ambitious undertakings.

Military Impact on Kyiv's Infrastructure

Following drone attacks on the Southern Bridge on October 1 and 2, traffic on several key city bridges has been restricted. Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported that two drone strikes damaged the bridge’s supports, guardrails, road surface, and even concrete barriers near the metro station. After a third drone strike on the Southern Bridge, its operational status remains uncertain. The Kyiv Defense Council is considering reopening metro transit across this bridge but awaits structural assessments from scientific experts.

"Every bridge has a safety margin, and our top priority is air defense, which we are coordinating with the military," Kalashnyk emphasized.

Due to ongoing air raid alerts, some bridges in the city are temporarily closed to ensure public safety.

These steps reflect the urgent need to protect Kyiv’s transportation network amid the ongoing conflict. Establishing alternative crossings and tunnel options is critical to sustaining the capital’s economic functions and daily life. Successfully realizing these projects will likely depend on attracting international investment and donor support, highlighting the importance of global cooperation during wartime.

As Kyiv advances its infrastructure plans, it's essential to consider the implications of ongoing military threats on traffic management. Recently, traffic on key bridges in the city has been temporarily suspended during air raid alerts, a measure that underscores the need for reliable alternatives.
