Overview of Leptospirosis in Lviv Region

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In 2026, the Lviv region recorded 10 cases of leptospirosis among residents, marking a significant decline compared to 19 cases reported in 2025, which included 3 deaths. Notably, no fatalities occurred in 2026. The two most recent infections involved individuals who had direct contact with nature: a 50-year-old man from a rural area who worked barefoot on his garden plot and a 66-year-old woman who, while vacationing in the Zakarpattia region, walked through the forest and drank water from natural springs.

Both patients sought medical care on the fifth day after symptom onset, which initially included fever, headaches, general weakness, and muscle pain in the calves and lower back. They later developed nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira, transmitted primarily through the urine of infected animals, especially rodents. The bacteria enter the body through broken skin or mucous membranes, making even minor cuts or abrasions a potential entry point.

Medical Advice for Prevention

Healthcare professionals stress the importance of safety measures during autumn gardening and outdoor activities, particularly when handling soil or consuming natural water sources. Recommended precautions include:

  • Wearing protective gloves and rubber boots, especially in damp conditions;
  • Covering any cuts or scratches with waterproof bandages;
  • Washing hands thoroughly with soap after working with soil;
  • Protecting food and water supplies from rodents and implementing rodent control;
  • Avoiding drinking water directly from forest springs, streams, rivers, or other unverified natural sources;
  • Using bottled water or water from treated and monitored supplies;
  • Boiling or disinfecting water if safe sources are unavailable.
The Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes: "The two most recent cases highlight the ongoing risks associated with autumn outdoor activities, including gardening and spending time in natural environments."

Anyone experiencing symptoms after exposure to wet soil, natural water, or outdoor environments should promptly consult a healthcare provider and inform them about possible exposure.

The reduction in leptospirosis cases in the Lviv region reflects the success of ongoing preventive efforts. However, educating the public about the risks linked to outdoor contact remains crucial, especially during the autumn season when many engage in gardening and outdoor recreation. Following medical guidelines can significantly reduce the chance of infection.
