Lviv Unveils the Open-Air Inclusive 'Unbreakable' Theatre Featuring a Veteran's Play

Launch of the Inclusive 'Unbreakable' Theatre of Resilience

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In Lviv’s Zamarsyniv Park, the new open-air inclusive stage called the 'Unbreakable' Theatre of Resilience has officially opened. Its inaugural performance was the play "To the Light and Back," penned by Andriy Hryhoriev, a veteran of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The production explores the soldiers' experiences through vivid depictions of purgatory, heaven, and hell. The theatre is directed by Svitlana Fedeshova.

The initiative was driven by the public organization "Budmo," which approached the UNBROKEN rehabilitation center with the vision of establishing an inclusive outdoor theatre. Anastasiya Marchenko, co-founder of "Budmo" and member of an architectural collective, emphasized the social importance of the project.

"We understood how mental recovery practices support veteran rehabilitation. However, it’s essential to create accessible spaces that encourage open dialogue between society and those who have lived through these experiences and have valuable stories to share," said Marchenko.

The Team and Rehearsals

The "Budmo" team includes volunteers from Slovenia, France, and Australia. Thanks to funding from the European Cultural Foundation, the stage was constructed using wood and other eco-friendly materials, reflecting sustainable architectural principles.

"As an architectural collective focused on social projects, we aim to promote sustainable architecture and contribute to Ukraine's reconstruction," Marchenko added.

Rehearsals for the play began in late summer 2026. Cast members brought prior stage experience to the production, and director Fedeshova remarked on the fast-paced preparation: "Everything moved quickly. We had limited rehearsal time, but by late summer we discussed the overall vision and held regular meetings." She highlighted the strong sense of community and enthusiasm among the participants.

Playwright Andriy Hryhoriev shared insights from his personal journey: "After combat, I found myself There. Just like in war, it’s straightforward and honest: there is Light, and there is Darkness." This project marks the first of its kind in Lviv to foster open communication and support for veterans. The opening of the 'Unbreakable' Theatre represents a significant stride toward integrating veterans into society and enriching the city's cultural landscape.

The launch of the 'Unbreakable' Theatre underscores the growing role of cultural initiatives in promoting veterans’ social inclusion after armed conflicts.
