Lviv Honors Composer Volodymyr Ivasyuk with a Commemorative Plaque on His Former Home

Remembering Volodymyr Ivasyuk in Lviv

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: A commemorative plaque was unveiled in Lviv on the house where the renowned Ukrainian composer Volodymyr Ivasyuk once lived and created his works. The event was organized by the Lviv City Council and attended by local officials as well as Ivasyuk’s sister, Halyna Ivasyuk-Krysa. Born in 1949 and tragically passing away in 1979, Ivasyuk is celebrated as a pioneer of Ukrainian pop music, having composed over 100 songs and 53 instrumental pieces.

Among Ivasyuk’s most beloved compositions are:

In 1972, Ivasyuk moved to Lviv, where he studied, developed his musical creations, and performed. Sadly, on May 18, 1979, his body was discovered in the Bryukhovychi forest near Lviv.

Yuriy Lukashevskyi, head of the Lychakiv District Administration and a participant in the ceremony, emphasized the significance of the tribute:

This is deeply symbolic and crucial because the current war is not only about land but also about preserving our identity and the right to speak Ukrainian and sing Ukrainian songs. Volodymyr Ivasyuk paid the ultimate price for this.- Yuriy Lukashevskyi

He further highlighted the importance of restoring Ivasyuk’s legacy, saying, “Our priority is not only rebuilding infrastructure and buildings but also reviving the meanings and spirit of our city.”

Ivasyuk’s sister, Halyna Ivasyuk-Krysa, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the city’s dedication to preserving her brother’s memory: “Every effort made for our literature and arts, which uphold our nation, is truly valuable. Only through profound spirituality, culture, and education can a nation truly flourish.”

The unveiling of this memorial plaque marks a significant moment in honoring a figure who left a lasting imprint on Ukrainian culture and music. This tribute resonates beyond Ivasyuk’s admirers, representing a broader commitment within Ukrainian society to safeguard cultural identity during challenging times.
