Visit by Ukraine’s Health Minister

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Ukraine’s Minister of Health, Viktor Liashko, toured the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, where a pilot project introducing modern approaches to medical education was launched in late 2024. As part of this initiative, the country’s first multi-specialty University Hospital was established on the university’s premises.

During the visit, the minister inspected several clinical units, including:

  • the interventional radiology department and an angiography operating room;
  • the Center for Dermatology and Venereology, created after the reorganization of the regional skin and venereal disease clinic;
  • the Laboratory and Instrumental Diagnostics Clinic.

Since May 2025, this clinic has been operating a new Siemens Magnetom Sola 1.5T MRI scanner, purchased by the state enterprise “Medical Procurement of Ukraine” on behalf of the Ministry of Health using public funds. The MRI unit is expected to conduct 300 to 400 scans per month, or up to 5,000 annually.

Advancing Medical Education

Additionally, the minister reviewed the operations of the university’s Simulation Medicine Center, which has conducted over 60 training sessions and practical exercises since early 2026, involving more than 1,000 students, interns, doctors, and nurses. The hospital also houses a Center for Veteran and Adaptive Sports.

As part of preparations for the pilot project, major renovations are underway on the university’s theoretical building, with total costs exceeding UAH 234 million. Furthermore, dormitory No. 7 is being reconstructed at a cost of over UAH 27 million. Once completed, the dormitory will provide accommodation for 448 students.

The pilot project is set to run through the end of 2025, and the Ministry of Health plans to expand the university hospital model to other medical higher education institutions across Ukraine.

The launch of this pilot project in medical education reflects the Ukrainian government’s efforts to modernize healthcare facilities and improve the training of medical professionals.

The creation of a multi-specialty university hospital and the adoption of advanced technologies like MRI imaging could significantly enhance the quality of healthcare services in Ukraine, while also providing students with modern learning and practice environments. Expanding this project to other medical universities will help spread these positive developments and technologies nationwide.

In light of the ongoing advancements in medical education, the introduction of a digital residency placement system for over 3,000 medical graduates marks a significant step forward. This initiative complements the establishment of Ukraine's first multi-specialty University Hospital, reflecting a broader commitment to enhancing healthcare and training for future professionals in the field.
