A Farm Entirely Run by Robots Now Operating in Norway

According to НВ — Техно: Norway has unveiled its pioneering fully automated vertical farm dedicated to growing fresh vegetables without any human intervention. Located in the town of Gardermoen near Oslo, this innovative project is a collaboration between Coop Norge and Avisomo, with valuable scientific support from the SINTEF research institute. Every step of the production process-from sowing seeds to packaging the final products-is managed by robots. This cutting-edge approach not only enhances the freshness and shelf life of vegetables but also reduces food waste and strengthens the nation's food security.

The farm’s initial batches of lettuce are already available in supermarkets. The crops are cultivated hydroponically on multi-tiered racks where roots are continuously nourished by nutrient-rich water. Advanced computer systems regulate lighting intensity and humidity around the clock. The fastest-growing greens mature within just two weeks, and the shelf life of the produce has extended from two weeks to twelve. This technology ensures a consistent supply of fresh vegetables year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

Boosting Food Security Through Automation

Automation also addresses labor shortages faced by traditional farms. Beyond lettuce, plans are underway to cultivate tomatoes, cucumbers, and strawberries using this method. According to Norway’s Defence Research Establishment (FFI), the country’s reliance on imported food poses a significant risk in case of war or border closures, highlighting the critical role of such innovations in national food resilience.

The debut of this robotic farm marks a significant advancement toward sustainable agriculture in Norway. Implementing automation increases production efficiency while tackling challenges linked to climate change and workforce scarcity. In light of current geopolitical tensions and import dependencies, this breakthrough aids Norway in achieving greater food independence and stability.
