New York Hosts Exhibition Honoring 975 Years of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and Centennial of National Reserve

Commemorating Milestones of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

This event was part of the activities during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week. The exhibition was organized through a collaboration between Ukraine's Ministry of Culture, the Ukrainian Institute of America, and various Ukrainian governmental and civic organizations.

Highlights of the Exhibition

The display features approximately 36 photographs showcasing the Lavra's rich history, architectural marvels, artistic heritage, and spiritual significance, alongside insights into its current state. Multimedia elements include videos and 3D visualizations that capture pivotal moments in the site's cultural timeline. A standout component is the "Kyiv Pechersk Lavra: Spatial Archive" project, developed in 2026 by the Ukrainian Center for Spatial Technologies, with creators Mykola Holovko, Maksym Rokmaniko, and Valeria Prorizna.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska attended the exhibition's opening. Deputy Minister of Culture Tetiana Filevska delivered a lecture on the Lavra's historical importance, emphasizing that

"The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra represents a heritage not only of Ukraine but of the entire world. For nearly a millennium, it has been a space where Ukrainian national and cultural identity was shaped and preserved."

She stressed the critical need for international dialogue about this heritage, especially in light of ongoing threats posed by Russian aggression.

The exhibition also addresses the damage inflicted on the Dormition Cathedral during a Russian attack on the night of June 15, 2026, which destroyed roughly 800 square meters of the cathedral's roof. This incident highlights the urgent importance of protecting Ukraine's cultural landmarks amid current challenges.

The 100th anniversary of the National Reserve "Kyiv Pechersk Lavra" has been recognized in UNESCO's calendar of commemorative events for 2026-2027. The exhibition at the Ukrainian Institute of America will remain open until October 6, 2026. Additionally, the event introduced plans to establish a Ukrainian National Pantheon near the Lavra, aimed at restoring public awareness of key figures who contributed to Ukraine's statehood, culture, and spiritual traditions.

Beyond marking these significant anniversaries, the exhibition underscores the vital need to safeguard Ukraine’s cultural heritage in the face of aggression. It also symbolizes international solidarity with Ukrainian history and culture during turbulent times. Inclusion of the anniversary in UNESCO’s calendar will further amplify global recognition of Ukraine’s invaluable cultural legacy.

In addition to the New York exhibition, a similar event recently took place in London, showcasing the sacred treasures of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra in honor of its 975th anniversary. This highlights the global recognition of the Lavra's cultural and historical significance, drawing attention to its enduring legacy and the ongoing efforts to preserve this invaluable heritage amidst current challenges.
