London Debuts Exhibition of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra’s Sacred Treasures on Its 975th Anniversary

‘Sacred Treasures from Kyiv’ Exhibit Opens at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London has unveiled a special exhibition titled “Sacred Treasures from Kyiv,” showcasing seven unique artifacts from the National Reserve of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. These rare items, displayed to a British audience for the first time, highlight the religious and artistic heritage of one of Ukraine’s most historic monasteries. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the V&A and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, supported by the British Council, Gilbert Trust for the Arts, the Ukrainian Institute, and Ukraine’s Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs, alongside the Ukrainian Embassy in the UK. This event coincides with the 975th anniversary of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and the centenary of the National Reserve.

Highlights of the Collection

The exhibition features seven remarkable pieces dating from the 17th to 18th centuries, representing the Baroque period’s craftsmanship. Key exhibits include:

• An icon;
• A Gospel book with a silver cover;
• A liturgical manuscript;
• A Eucharistic diskos;
• A gilded silver chalice depicting the Crucifixion.

These treasures are displayed within the V&A’s Sacred Silver and Stained Glass and Silver Galleries. Additionally, two gilded silver Royal Doors originating from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra are on long-term loan to the museum from the Gilbert Trust for the Arts. Notably, previous cataloging and interpretation of these Royal Doors had been framed within a Russian imperial context, neglecting their Ukrainian origins.

Prominent figures present at the opening included Tetiana Berezhna, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy; Tristram Hunt, Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum; Sam Harvey, Deputy Director for Geographical Networks at the British Council; Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UK; and Maksym Ostapenko, Director General of the National Reserve of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

Founded in the 11th century, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a cornerstone of Eastern Orthodox religious culture. The 2026 exhibition honors both its 975 years of history and the 100-year legacy of the National Reserve. Established in 1852, the V&A holds a collection exceeding 2.8 million objects and is known for fostering international partnerships to promote cultural preservation and research.

“Ukraine’s cultural heritage is a vital part of world history and deserves prominent recognition on the global stage,” said Tetiana Berezhna.

Sam Harvey emphasized that these national treasures reflect the exceptional skill of Ukrainian silversmiths and reveal the richness of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra’s artistic legacy. Maksym Ostapenko highlighted that the exhibition introduces the international community to the Ukrainian school of sacred goldsmithing from the 18th century, marking a significant achievement in Ukrainian Baroque art.

“Sacred Treasures from Kyiv” represents a meaningful advancement in international cultural cooperation, opening new avenues for the study, preservation, and protection of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

The exhibit’s launch at the V&A underscores the increasing global appreciation of Ukrainian cultural contributions, helping to restore historical accuracy by acknowledging the Ukrainian origins of artifacts long misattributed. This initiative also fosters deeper cultural exchange between Ukraine and the United Kingdom, with promising implications for future international cultural relations.
