Spreuerhofstraße: The World's Slimmest Street

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Located in the German city of Reutlingen, Spreuerhofstraße is recognized as the narrowest street globally, narrowing down to a mere 31 centimeters at its tightest point. This remarkable street earned its spot in the Guinness World Records in 2006. Its origins trace back to a devastating fire in 1726 that destroyed much of Reutlingen. Officially designated a public street in 1820, Spreuerhofstraße has been preserved despite structural challenges, notably through the reinforcement of house number 9, which experienced deformation over time.

Stretching approximately 3.8 meters in length, Spreuerhofstraße runs between houses numbered 9 and 11. The street's width varies between 50 cm and the record-breaking 31 cm gap, which narrows around head height due to the outward bulge of house number 9’s wall. This distortion was caused by old wooden beams that absorbed moisture, but strengthening efforts have maintained both the street and the adjacent historic building, making Spreuerhofstraße a unique attraction for visitors.

The Cultural Impact of Spreuerhofstraße

Locals of Reutlingen often joke about the street’s narrowness, saying,

“Once I squeeze through this crack, I’ll have reached my ideal weight.”

This playful remark highlights how even within such a confined space, human spirit and humor thrive. Registered officially as street number 77 in the city records, its measurements were verified by Guinness World Records representatives in February 2006.

More than just an architectural curiosity, Spreuerhofstraße stands as a symbol of resilience and the preservation of Reutlingen’s rich historical heritage.

Today, the street is not only a popular tourist destination but also a significant part of Reutlingen’s cultural identity. Its distinctiveness draws visitors from around the world, contributing positively to the local economy. Spreuerhofstraße exemplifies how historic sites can be maintained and adapted for modern community life, continuing to play an active role in the city’s social fabric.
