Switzerland confirmed that the USA postponed the delivery of Patriot systems in favor of Ukraine

The US Department of Defense has decided to change the priorities for supporting Ukraine, including ground-based air defense systems.

The USA officially informed the Swiss Ministry of Defense about the delay in the delivery of Patriot air defense systems due to a review of priorities in favor of supporting Ukraine. The decision affects five batteries that Switzerland ordered in 2022, with the planned start of delivery in 2027.

The new strategy envisages that arms suppliers for Ukraine will be able to receive replacements for the systems transferred more quickly. As part of this initiative, Germany has already decided to transfer two additional Patriot systems from its reserves to Ukraine.

According to the Foreign Military Sales agreement signed in 2022, Switzerland was supposed to receive five Patriot systems with deliveries starting in 2027 and concluding in 2028. However, on July 16, the US Department of Defense officially notified the Swiss side of the change in the delivery schedule.

Currently, Swiss military personnel cannot accurately say how many systems will be delayed or how this will affect the delivery of guided missiles. Consultations are being conducted regarding new delivery timelines and potential consequences for Switzerland's air defense modernization program.

This delay is already the second for Switzerland. A year ago, the USA reported a delay in the delivery of PAC-3 MSE guided missiles for Patriot systems, which the parliament approved in 2023 after ordering the main weaponry.

The delivery of Patriot systems for Switzerland has been delayed in favor of supporting Ukraine. The USA decided to redirect priorities and has already announced its intention to transfer additional Patriot systems to Ukraine. Switzerland is now searching for new delivery timelines for its Patriot systems; however, the exact quantity and the impact of the delay on deliveries are not yet determined.
