Hungary Agrees to Release Blocked Financial Aid for Ukraine

According to Главком: Hungary has agreed to unlock €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility for Ukraine. The decision was made at the level of European Union member state ambassadors and could be used to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Budapest had previously held up this funding package for two years, but a shift occurred after certain agreements were reached. This move comes amid ongoing Russian aggression, which has intensified Ukraine’s need for advanced air defense systems.

A final decision on the specific use of the funds has not yet been made. The next step involves the European External Action Service preparing a legislative proposal for disbursing the amount to Ukraine. Once drafted, the document must be approved by all EU member states. Ukraine has urged that part of the money go toward purchasing additional Patriot systems and their ammunition. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also highlighted the possibility of allocating resources to buy American air defense systems through NATO’s ‘Priority Requirements List for Ukraine’ (PURL).

The European Peace Facility and Its Significance
