Ukrainian Bank's Cash Transports Intercepted in Hungary

According to Главком: On March 5, Hungarian law enforcement intercepted two armored cash transport vehicles belonging to Ukraine's Oschadbank as they were moving from Austria to Ukraine. The authorities confiscated $40 million, €35 million, and approximately 9 kilograms of gold. Seven bank employees accompanying the vehicles were detained. One of the guards was hospitalized following questioning.

Government Response and Wider Implications

The Hungarian government issued a special decree stating that the seized assets will remain under Hungarian control for the duration of an investigation. The Oschadbank employees have since returned to Ukraine. Andriy Pyshnyi, Chairman of the Board of Oschadbank, condemned the action, labeling it 'absurd and illegal':

“The Hungarian authorities' decision to seize funds from the state-owned Oschadbank's cash-in-transit vehicles bears the hallmarks of political pressure and international blackmail.” - Andriy Pyshnyi

This incident has caused significant concern within Ukraine's banking sector and government institutions, as it could negatively impact international relations. The investigation is ongoing, and the next steps by Hungarian authorities are being closely watched. The seizure highlights the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Hungary, which have been at odds over various political and economic issues. Such a high-value confiscation risks undermining trust in cross-border financial operations and raises new legal questions. Observers expect that Hungary's subsequent actions could influence policy in international finance and security, necessitating careful monitoring by Ukrainian officials.
