Ukraine Prepares for Evacuation Along the Belarus Border
Fortifying Ukraine's Border with Belarus
According to Главком: Ukraine has maximally reinforced its border with Belarus within the Volyn region, as defense forces continue to strengthen protection of the state frontier. Authorities are ready to promptly conduct a full evacuation of residents from border settlements. This was stated by Olha Cheren, head of the Kovel District Military Administration. Military and civilian officials do not rule out the threat of a potential offensive by the Russian army from Belarusian territory, as security measures along this stretch have been ongoing since the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Border Situation and Evacuation Readiness
Olha Cheren also noted that if a threat emerges on the border with Belarus, adjacent areas will be subject to full evacuation. 'Locations have already been identified where the population will be evacuated if necessary,' she added. Local residents are regularly prepared for a possible evacuation. The situation at the border remains under control, and there has been no increase in enemy equipment or troops so far. However, intelligence has recorded increased pressure from Russia on Minsk.
Last night, border guards recorded a strike drone entering Ukrainian territory from Belarus; the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine believes it was a Russian drone. Earlier, two reconnaissance drones were also detected along the border within the Zhytomyr and Rivne regions. On May 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a Staff meeting where he outlined five scenarios for the war expanding from the north. In response, defense forces in this direction will be strengthened.
Ukraine is actively bolstering its defenses, increasing fortifications and mine-explosive barriers along the entire length of the border with Belarus, from the Volyn to Chernihiv regions. The situation remains tense, but the local population continues to work as usual.
'Our population is working as usual. We are sowing, weeding, and carrying out all agricultural work, because our district is a border area. But people know how to behave properly in case of a threat, because we have prepared and continue to prepare people for a possible evacuation if such a need arises,' Olha Cheren emphasized.
The strengthening of defenses on the border with Belarus underscores the seriousness of potential threats arising from intensified military actions from the neighboring country's territory. Authorities and the military are taking measures to ensure public safety and are ready to respond quickly if the situation escalates. The ongoing preparation of the population for a possible evacuation reflects the realities of the current conflict and the necessity of preserving lives and health in a crisis situation.
