Ukraine Nears Security Pacts with Gulf Nations to Counter Iranian Drone Threat
Security Negotiations with Persian Gulf States
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine is moving closer to signing security agreements with several Persian Gulf nations, aiming to counter the threat posed by Iranian drone attacks. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha made this announcement in an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in France. His statement coincided with a visit to the Gulf region by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
These negotiations are being conducted with countries including:
- Saudi Arabia
- Kuwait
- Jordan
- Oman
The most advanced talks, however, are currently underway with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Sybiha noted that since the start of the war, Gulf Arab states have expended over 800 Patriot missile system interceptors, underscoring the serious nature of the aerial threats they also face. This shared security concern provides a foundation for cooperation.
Cooperation with China and Drone Technology
Foreign Minister Sybiha also mentioned meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the G7 gathering. Separately, Sybiha has received an invitation to visit China, a trip that could occur within the next two months. China remains Ukraine's largest trading partner, making diplomatic engagement a complex but necessary priority.

Collaboration on drone technology is another key item on the negotiation agenda. Russia is known to provide Iran with intelligence support, spare parts, drone supplies, and combat experience exchanges, making partnerships with Gulf states increasingly vital for Ukraine's defense. This geopolitical dynamic highlights Ukraine's strategic pivot to secure allies and advanced capabilities beyond its traditional European partners.
These developments signal the growing importance of the Persian Gulf region for Ukraine as it confronts ongoing security challenges. Finalizing these security agreements could significantly bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities and open new avenues for technological cooperation. The continued support from the United States and the potential for intensified dialogue with China are also critical factors that may shape Ukraine's future international strategy.
As Ukraine strengthens its defense ties with Gulf nations, the ongoing discussions at the G7 meeting reveal the broader geopolitical implications of these alliances. Insights from recent talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials further highlight the interconnected nature of security concerns in both Ukraine and the Middle East.
