Ukraine Set to Receive Gripen Jets Armed with Meteor Missiles Within 10 Months
Delivery of JAS 39 Gripen Fighter Jets to Ukraine
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine is poised to take delivery of its first batch of Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, equipped with Meteor missiles, in the coming 10 months. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy initiated the signing of an agreement with the Swedish government, under which Ukraine will purchase up to 20 multirole fighters of the E variant. Additionally, 16 aircraft of the C/D versions will be provided to Ukraine as military aid.
The JAS 39 Gripen jets will come armed with Meteor long-range air-to-air missiles. These missiles boast a strike range exceeding 100 km, with a maximum reach of 200 km, and a speed of approximately 4,600 kilometers per hour. The Meteor features an active radar homing seeker and a ramjet engine. It is manufactured by the European defense consortium MBDA.
This acquisition comes as part of a broader effort to modernize Ukraine’s air force amid ongoing regional tensions, where advanced adversary aircraft like the Su-34 and Su-35 pose significant threats.
