Ukrainian medical education among international educational practices

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: At the end of August, the annual international healthcare education conference AMEE-2026 took place in Vienna. This year, the event brought together over 4,000 participants from more than 100 countries. The Ukrainian delegation, consisting of nine representatives, presented their achievements in medical education, particularly under wartime conditions, supported by the Ukrainian-Swiss project 'Development of Medical Education.'

Key conference topics

Among the key topics discussed at the conference were:

• digital transformation;
• simulation-based learning;
• development of clinical thinking;
• support for students' mental health;
• professional development of educators.

Chernivtsi State Medical University presented the results of its work in digital pedagogy and modernization of educational programs. The university also showcased training in medical psychology for future pediatricians using simulation methods.

Sumi State University shared its experience in preparing students to work with children's mental health in frontline regions through community-based learning. University representatives also presented the results of a study on the effectiveness of active and simulation-based teaching methods for master's students in medicine during wartime, considering student assessments.

The participation of a representative from Ternopil National Medical University named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky also took part in AMEE-2026, presenting a multi-level educational initiative for developing clinical thinking in Ukraine. Additionally, a representative from the 'Development of Medical Education' project discussed systematic support for teaching excellence and the transition to a competency-based professional development system for educators.

Ukrainian participants had the opportunity to attend plenary sessions, participate in workshops, and engage in discussions regarding the development of partnerships among educational institutions. Participation in the AMEE-2026 conference became an important platform for knowledge exchange and the implementation of new practices in Ukrainian medical education.

The involvement of the Ukrainian delegation in AMEE-2026 highlights Ukraine's efforts to integrate into international educational systems, despite the challenges posed by war. The presentations from Ukrainian universities reflect a commitment to implementing innovations in medical education, particularly through the use of new technologies and teaching methods. This can contribute to improving the quality of medical training in Ukraine and their preparedness for work under modern conditions.
