A faster challenge to Shaheds: Ukraine shifts into higher gear on interceptor drone production

Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff weighs next steps

According to ХВИЛЯ: Volodymyr Zelenskyy chaired the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff, with the session centering on accelerating the production of high-speed interceptor drones capable of stopping jet-propelled Shaheds. Ukrainian companies already have finished prototypes for the new weapon, a sign that the required tasks can be met. Announcement came on the president’s official Facebook page.

Industrial output and cooperation on the agenda

The Staff also examined how to bring business into manufacturing, supply, and calibration of selected air-defense systems. Clear deadlines and objectives were set for the air-defense track.

“The key issue is speeding up all processes for building high-speed interceptors against jet-propelled Shaheds. Ukraine has manufacturers with the capacity to do it. Prototypes have been developed, and work continues to bring this new weapon up to the necessary level of effectiveness,” Zelenskyy said.

The overarching goal is to achieve, through expansion of the domestic defense industry and cooperation with partners, enough quality and quantity in fast interceptor drones and cheap missiles to secure the country as Russia steps up manufacturing of similar high-speed attack assets.

“The overall objective is for our defense industry and our work with partners to reach a level that gives Ukraine sufficient quality and quantity of exactly these fast interceptor drones and inexpensive missiles, so we can guarantee protection while the Russians are increasing output of corresponding high-speed attack systems,” he emphasized.

He added that Ukrainian intelligence has precise insight into enemy plans. “Our intelligence agencies have clear information about the enemy’s plans, and our resources are aimed at providing a clear answer to the threat. We will also act asymmetrically. The relevant operations have been approved,” the president said. Earlier, Zelenskyy had set the task of downing more than 90% of Russian drones by autumn.

The Staff session signals Ukraine’s determination to intensify defense technologies and improve the performance of its air defense. With the danger from Russian drones growing, a faster route to new interceptor drones could be crucial for the country’s air security. Engaging business and leveraging domestic manufacturers is designed not only to supply the armed forces but also to build up Ukraine’s defense-industrial base, an important element of independence and endurance during the conflict.

As Ukraine intensifies its focus on developing high-speed interceptor drones, the strategic importance of enhancing air defense systems becomes even more apparent. In a related initiative, Zelensky has outlined plans to strengthen air defenses and establish an anti-ballistic shield, further underscoring the need for a comprehensive approach to national security amid escalating threats.
