Ukraine and Japan Implement Artificial Intelligence for De-mining

Collaboration between Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency

According to Мін. Економіки: Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) discussed areas of cooperation in the field of humanitarian de-mining. During working meetings between the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine and JICA, important aspects regarding:

• the development of the GRIT prioritization system;
• piloting new technologies;
• support for women's participation in this field.

Among the key areas of cooperation, the development of the GRIT prioritization system was emphasized, which helps determine which areas need to be cleared first, taking into account not only the level of contamination but also the damage to infrastructure and the needs of communities. It is also planned to pilot a damage assessment module for buildings using artificial intelligence. This aims to improve assessment and recovery processes after de-mining.

Additionally, the creation of a network of Ukrainian laboratories for soil analysis after de-mining was discussed, which will allow for the confirmation of land safety before it is returned for agricultural use. An important aspect is the support for the development of human capital, particularly expanding women's participation in the field of humanitarian de-mining.

Ihor Bezkaravainyi, commenting on the cooperation, noted: 'Cleared land must be suitable for use. It is essential to prioritize based on community needs, assess soil safety, and combine de-mining with recovery planning and economic activity. Cooperation with JICA helps us integrate these components and strengthen Ukraine's capabilities in the long term.'

Ukraine's collaboration with JICA in humanitarian de-mining is an important step towards improving the safety of territories affected by conflict. The use of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, and the development of the GRIT prioritization system will allow for more effective determination of land clearance priorities. This, in turn, will aid in the restoration of infrastructure and ensure the safety of lands for agricultural use, which has a significant impact on the recovery of regional economies.

As Ukraine enhances its de-mining efforts through advanced collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, it is crucial to recognize the progress already made. Recently, over 16,400 hectares of agricultural land were cleared of landmines, showcasing the importance of these initiatives in restoring safety and enabling agricultural activities in affected regions. This ongoing commitment to improving land safety is essential for Ukraine's recovery and economic development.
