Security Cooperation Agreement Between Ukraine and Bulgaria

According to Главком: During a Bulgarian delegation's visit to Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Bulgaria's interim Prime Minister Andrey Gurov signed a security cooperation agreement and a protocol concerning the Bolhrad Gymnasium. This meeting also marked the first joint governmental consultations, resulting in a joint statement and an agreement to develop a roadmap of practical steps for future collaboration. This agreement represents a significant step in Bulgaria's support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.

At the signing ceremony, Gurov emphasized that this long-prepared document is crucial for shared European security.

"Today, the President and I signed a security cooperation agreement that has been in preparation for a long time. I am pleased we were able to accomplish this now. This is not merely a formality; it is joint work for our common European security. As a government, we have also approved our national contribution to NATO's defense mechanism. This is solidarity in action, something we believe will enhance Europe's overall security," Gurov stated.

The agreement identifies the following as key areas for cooperation:

• Defense
• Energy
• Transport
• Black Sea security
• Meeting the educational needs of children and youth

A separate protocol regarding the H.S. Rakovsky Bolhrad Gymnasium was also signed in Kyiv. Gurov highlighted the document's importance, noting it concerns the historically largest Bulgarian diaspora abroad.

"I believe this document is very important. This is historically the largest Bulgarian diaspora abroad, and we are very pleased to have ensured these people will continue to have access to education in the Bulgarian language. We look forward to continuing our cooperation in this direction," Gurov noted.

The Bulgarian delegation, which included Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky, Transport and Communications Minister Korman Ismailov, Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov, Education and Science Minister Sergey Ignatov, and Energy Minister Traicho Traikov, also discussed the resumption of passenger rail links between the two countries.

Gurov added that this is important not only for energy diversification but also for the entire eastern flank of NATO.

The signing of the security pact signals a deepening of relations between Ukraine and Bulgaria within the context of shared European security. The agreement covers critical sectors that could significantly impact regional stability, including defense and energy.
