Poland and Ukraine Negotiate Transfer of Additional MiG-29 Fighter Jets
Military Cooperation Talks Between Poland and Ukraine
According to Главком: Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov met with his Polish counterpart, Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Their discussions centered on joint defense initiatives, bolstering Ukraine's short-range air defense (SHORAD) systems, and enhancing its aerial capabilities. A primary focus was the potential modernization of MiG-29 fighter jets and the exchange of military expertise between the two nations.
Details on the MiG-29 Transfer and Modernization Plans
Poland had already supplied Ukraine with MiG-29 jets in 2023. Currently, Poland is working on transferring an additional 6 to 8 aircraft of this type. These particular MiG-29s were slated to be decommissioned from the Polish military by the end of December 2025. However, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk noted that the handover of the extra jets is currently delayed due to unresolved security conditions related to Poland's own airspace defense.
During the talks, Minister Fedorov stressed the critical importance of collaborative work to upgrade the aircraft, thereby improving their effectiveness against enemy targets. He stated:
'We separately discussed the transfer of MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine-a crucial component for defending our skies. We will work together on their modernization.'
Fedorov added that battlefield data and Ukraine's practical combat experience could prove valuable for strengthening the capabilities of the Polish armed forces.
Cezary Tomczyk assured that 'transferring the aircraft to Ukraine will not harm Poland's defense capabilities.' Military collaboration between Ukraine and Poland continues to deepen, including in areas such as countering drone threats and sharing expertise on unmanned technologies.
The ongoing negotiations over the MiG-29s underscore the significance of the defense partnership between Ukraine and Poland amid escalating threats from Russia. This cooperation is a key element of Western support for Ukraine's war effort. Strengthening Ukraine's air power is a critical factor for its national security, while the mutual exchange of experience can enhance the effectiveness of both nations' militaries. Given the complex political and security challenges, such collaboration represents an important factor for regional stability in Eastern Europe.
